The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) for 2026 has revealed the top 20 universities globally, with the United States leading the pack. Harvard University has once again secured the top position for the 23rd consecutive year, achieving a perfect score of 100 out of 100. Following Harvard are Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), both also from the U.S.

In total, 14 American universities made it to the top 20, while Europe is represented by four institutions, with the University of Cambridge taking the fourth spot, making it the highest-ranked university in Europe. Asia has only one entry in the top 20, Tsinghua University from China.

The tuition fees for these prestigious institutions range significantly, with most charging between $54,800 and $85,800 per year. Notable exceptions include Paris-Saclay University in France, which charges only $206, ETH Zurich in Switzerland at $5,500, and Tsinghua University at $4,300.

The ARWU, launched in 2003 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, is one of the three most prestigious university rankings in the world, alongside QS and THE. It evaluates universities based on several criteria, including education quality (10%), faculty quality (40%), research output (40%), and research performance per capita (10%). The faculty quality criterion considers the number of Nobel and Fields medalists, as well as highly cited researchers. Research output is measured by the number of articles published in reputable journals such as Nature and Science.
