Huỳnh Lập Aims for Success with 'Summer Break: Fear of Retirement'

Director Huỳnh Lập is setting high expectations for his upcoming film, 'Summer Break: Fear of Retirement,' aiming to exceed the impressive box office earnings of 240 billion VND from his previous work, 'The Ancestor's House.' During the film's premiere on August 13 in Ho Chi Minh City, he expressed the pressures associated with the upcoming National Day film season on September 2.

'The Ancestor's House,' which marked Huỳnh Lập's directorial debut and starred Phương Mỹ Chi, was a major hit, landing in the top 10 highest-grossing Vietnamese films at the time. Huỳnh Lập stated, 'I aim for this new project to at least surpass the achievements of my previous film, as this will provide the funding necessary for future productions. Besides the affection from the audience, box office revenue is a key motivation for us to continue in this industry.'

He acknowledged the competitive landscape for the upcoming National Day, with other films like the action-packed 'The Warrior's Spirit' and 'The Wealthy Heir' vying for attention. To maximize screening opportunities, Huỳnh Lập has decided to release 'Summer Break: Fear of Retirement' two weeks early, hoping the film can maintain a long run in theaters.

This film, categorized as a psychological family drama, delves into the theme of intergenerational conflict. The story follows Bình (played by Cody Nam Võ), a young man eager to start his own business, troubled by the question, 'What if my life isn't spectacular?' Upon returning to his hometown, he faces challenges stemming from the generational gap with his strict grandfather (played by artist Cao Minh), a former soldier accustomed to discipline.

Huỳnh Lập shared that the inspiration for the script came during a visit to a war hero cemetery in Côn Đảo, where he was moved by the sight of many unmarked graves. After completing 'The Ancestor's House,' he dedicated six months to crafting this new narrative. His experiences as a soldier during the reality show 'Stars in the Military 2024' also contributed to the film's material.

As he navigates the post-production phase while preparing for the reality show 'Brother Overcoming Thousands of Obstacles 2026,' Huỳnh Lập often finds himself reviewing footage, visual effects, and sound to ensure the film is ready for its release.

At 33 years old, Huỳnh Lập gained recognition through the comedy group DAMtv and won the 2015 edition of 'Vietnam's Got Talent.' He has since become a promising figure in Vietnamese cinema, with his film 'The Blind Master' grossing over 60 billion VND in 2019.
