Thanh Hang's recent films, 'Mesdames Thanh Sac' and 'Summer School, 2001', have faced significant challenges at the box office, with each film selling only six tickets on July 23. This starkly contrasts with the ongoing success of foreign films in Vietnamese cinemas.

According to Box Office Vietnam, 'Mesdames Thanh Sac' managed to sell just six tickets across five screenings, generating a mere 530,000 VND in revenue that day. Similarly, 'Summer School, 2001' attracted only six viewers per screening, earning 468,000 VND. Both films premiered on June 19 and are now nearing the end of their theatrical run.

'Mesdames Thanh Sac', directed by Thang Vu, marks Thanh Hang's return to the big screen after several years. In addition to starring as the lead character, she also invested in and produced the project. Set in 1960s Saigon, the film revolves around the characters Cam Thanh (played by Thanh Hang) and Madame Sac (Hong Anh), who are embroiled in a conflict involving love, power, and status, with Luong The Thanh as the male lead.

Despite a strong opening week where the film grossed approximately 10 billion VND due to its star-studded cast and promotional activities, ticket sales plummeted in subsequent weeks. By June 26, the film had earned around 13 billion VND, and after a month in theaters, its total revenue increased by just over 3.6 billion VND.

However, feedback from audiences has been mixed, with critiques focusing on the script, dialogue, and performances. Certain excerpts, including Thanh Hang's line “Stop the car,” have sparked discussions online, yet this buzz has not translated into significant box office success. Reports indicate that 'Mesdames Thanh Sac' needs to earn about 80 billion VND to start turning a profit, and given its current performance and limited screenings, it seems unlikely to recoup its investment.

In contrast, 'Summer School, 2001', the debut feature of Czech-Vietnamese director Duzan Duong, has a smaller release and promotional scale. The film tells the story of a 17-year-old named Kien who returns to live with his family in the Czech Republic after spending time in Vietnam, exploring generational and cultural gaps. Although it received some positive feedback for its portrayal of the Vietnamese diaspora, its niche subject matter and limited marketing have hindered its reach to a broader audience. As of the afternoon of July 23, 'Summer School, 2001' had only grossed 154.38 million VND and was down to just one screening.

While both Vietnamese films struggle, foreign films continue to dominate the box office. On July 23, 'Conan Movie 29: The Fallen Angel on the Highway' led with over 3.37 billion VND, followed by 'The Odyssey' with 2.7 billion VND and 'Minions & Monsters' with over 721 million VND. 'Minions & Monsters' has surpassed 144.4 billion VND in total earnings, while 'Conan Movie 29' has grossed over 61.1 billion VND and 'The Odyssey' around 39.25 billion VND. The highest-grossing Vietnamese film of the day was 'Demon Catcher', which ranked fourth with 212 million VND, bringing its total revenue to nearly 32.91 billion VND.
