Xaysomphone Phomvihane, the Chairman of the National Assembly of Laos, died at the age of 70 on August 8, 2023, at 11:18 AM, following a struggle with severe vasculitis. His passing has been officially announced by the Lao News Agency (TTXVN).

In response to his death, the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, the National Assembly, the government, and the Lao Front for National Construction have declared a national mourning period lasting five days, from August 9 to August 13. A memorial service will be held on August 13 at That Luang Square.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that Trần Thanh Mẫn, the Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam, will lead a high-level delegation from the Vietnamese Party and state to pay their respects to Xaysomphone Phomvihane in the capital city of Vientiane.

Xaysomphone Phomvihane was born on December 12, 1956, in Nameo village, Viengxay district, Houaphanh province. He held various leadership positions in local and national sectors before assuming the role of Chairman of the National Assembly of Laos in January 2021.

The Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, the National Assembly, and the government have emphasized that Xaysomphone Phomvihane was a knowledgeable and capable leader, known for his sharp insight and rich experience, and he achieved many notable accomplishments during his career.
