PNJ Sees Surge in Diamond Sales as Customers Seek Gold Alternatives
The number of customers selling diamonds has increased significantly, prompting PNJ to implement new

The diamond market in Vietnam is currently facing a crisis, as prices have fallen sharply amid a wave of jewelry shop closures. Over the past few weeks, numerous stores have shut down, leading to a surge in online transactions where diamonds are being sold at drastically reduced prices. Some sellers are offering their diamond jewelry at discounts of up to 50%, yet they still find it challenging to attract buyers.
In just three days, the number of participants in diamond liquidation groups on social media has surged to 1,200, as customers from closed shops seek to sell their goods. For instance, a customer named J.D posted in a liquidation group, offering a diamond ring originally valued at nearly 530 million VND for just 350 million VND, a reduction of 200 million VND from its purchase price.
Another seller listed a bracelet with 750 diamonds for 33 million VND, significantly lower than the original price. Many sellers are struggling to sell their items even at these discounted rates, indicating a broader issue within the market.
Companies are also responding to the downturn by slashing prices. One company in Ho Chi Minh City has reduced the prices of loose diamonds by 8%, with larger diamonds seeing reductions of up to 11%. For example, a 6.8 mm diamond's price dropped from 446.35 million VND to 397.25 million VND.
Experts note that the price of diamonds is influenced by several factors, including quality, size, clarity, and color. A diamond's value can vary significantly based on these attributes, and consumers are advised to be cautious when purchasing diamonds online. The market's volatility has also led to an increase in scams, with fraudulent companies exploiting the situation to deceive buyers.
As the diamond market continues to fluctuate, it remains essential for consumers to conduct thorough research and seek certified appraisals before making purchases. The current environment highlights the importance of understanding the true value of diamonds and the potential risks involved in buying and selling them.
