Liver cancer on the rise in Vietnam
Vietnam had 26,418 new cases of liver cancer, accounting for 14.5%, the highest among common cancers in 2020.

The NeoOncoVac vaccine, a personalized mRNA cancer treatment developed in Russia, is attracting considerable attention. This innovative approach differs from conventional vaccines, which typically use a one-size-fits-all formula. Instead, NeoOncoVac is designed based on the unique characteristics of each patient's tumor, offering a more tailored treatment option.
Dr. Nguyen Duy Anh, Deputy Director of the Oncology and Radiotherapy Center at Phuong Dong General Hospital, emphasizes the importance of understanding the nature of this technology before setting expectations. Unlike vaccines such as HPV or hepatitis B, which prevent infections that can lead to cancer, NeoOncoVac is a therapeutic vaccine aimed at treating existing cancer.
NeoOncoVac works by providing the immune system with essential information to recognize the distinctive features of cancer cells, thereby activating an immune response to control and eliminate abnormal cells. This personalized approach aims to help the immune system identify the 'enemy' it needs to attack, particularly when cancer cells have developed ways to evade detection.
Initial data on NeoOncoVac suggests it can generate immune responses in patients, which is a positive sign. However, Dr. Duy Anh cautions that the limited number of patients studied so far does not provide sufficient evidence to confirm long-term treatment efficacy. In oncology, new methods are evaluated not only by tumor shrinkage or immune activation but also by critical factors such as patient survival rates, disease progression duration, recurrence rates, and potential side effects.
Despite the promising nature of NeoOncoVac, it is essential to avoid interpreting initial results as proof that a 'cancer cure vaccine' is available. The concept of therapeutic vaccines is not new; there have been existing treatments like sipuleucel-T (Provenge), approved by the FDA in 2010 for metastatic prostate cancer, which uses the patient's immune cells to stimulate an anti-cancer response.
Dr. Duy Anh highlights that patients should not delay proven treatment methods while waiting for new vaccines. Currently, NeoOncoVac is still undergoing evaluation and has not yet become a widely accepted standard treatment. Therefore, patients diagnosed with cancer must undergo comprehensive evaluations to determine appropriate treatment plans based on cancer type, stage, and tumor biology.
In the future, if personalized therapeutic vaccines prove effective through large-scale studies and receive regulatory approval, they could become valuable supplementary options for cancer patients. Vietnam has the opportunity to access advanced treatment technologies like personalized cancer vaccines, as the country increasingly collaborates internationally in biotechnology.
While this represents a significant step forward, it is crucial to remain cautious with scientific advancements. Cancer patients have the right to hope, but such hope should be grounded in evidence rather than the anticipation that emerging technologies will immediately replace current treatment methods.
