Kiev experienced a wave of destruction as Russian forces launched a large-scale missile attack on the Ukrainian capital, resulting in chaos and thick smoke filling the air. Reports indicate that at least four people have lost their lives due to the strikes. Mayor Vitali Klitschko issued a warning to residents, urging them to stay in shelters as the city was under attack.

According to an AFP reporter in Kiev, over ten consecutive explosions were heard, with shockwaves so powerful that car alarms were triggered across the streets. Ukrainian Air Force officials have also warned that more ballistic missiles are heading towards the city.

Eyewitness accounts describe the scene as smoke enveloped the sky above Kiev, with multiple explosions shaking the city. Local authorities reported that Russian missiles struck both civilian and non-civilian structures, including residential buildings, warehouses, a car wash station, and a parking lot. Residents in some apartment buildings found themselves trapped as missiles hit their homes.

Mayor Klitschko noted that missile debris fell on a five-story building in the Solomiansky district, igniting a fire in the communal yard and complicating evacuation efforts. He stated, “People are trapped.” A similar situation unfolded in the Shevchenkivsky district, where residents were also stuck following partial building collapses. Emergency response teams were dispatched to the sites of the attacks.

In his latest update, Klitschko confirmed that at least four people had died and 13 others were injured in the missile assault. The Ukrainian Air Force has yet to release statistics regarding the targets and interception rates. According to AMK Mapping, an account specializing in open-source intelligence on the Ukraine conflict, Russia launched 28 missiles during the early morning attack. This included 18 Iskander-M ballistic missiles and eight Zircon hypersonic missiles, which targeted at least five defense-related enterprises in Kiev.

Additionally, two Zircon missiles struck an unidentified target in the Poltava region. The Russian Ministry of Defense has not commented on these reports. This marks the second major missile assault by Russia on Ukraine within a 48-hour period. The previous attack on July 29-30 targeted several Ukrainian cities, including Lviv, resulting in eight deaths and over 50 injuries.

The missile strikes also triggered alarms in eastern Poland, as a missile believed to be of the Kh-101 type fell in a field in Lublin province. Throughout the spring and summer, Russia has frequently launched ballistic missiles at Kiev. The Patriot air defense system is considered Ukraine's most effective defense against such missiles, but the country is running low on ammunition for this system.

In a recent cabinet meeting, U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that discussions were ongoing regarding the potential transfer of technology to allow Ukraine to produce Patriot missiles domestically. However, he later expressed reservations, stating, “We have not agreed to that. We are discussing it, but transferring such technology is not straightforward.”
