Nguyen Duy Nhat, a 30-year-old former doctor working in the Stroke Department of Hue Central Hospital, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for theft. On July 28, the People's Court of Hue Area 1 convicted him of stealing from three gold shops, with the total value of the stolen items exceeding 5 billion VND.

According to court documents, Nhat had invested in cryptocurrency but suffered significant losses, leading him into debt. Unable to repay his loans, he resorted to stealing to settle his debts and continue investing in crypto.

Between June and July 2025, Nhat broke into several gold shops in Hue. On June 13, he entered Kim Lien Chinh gold shop at Da Le market and stole 12 gold rings and various silver jewelry, selling them for 44 million VND. On July 10, he targeted Kim Chau Lam gold shop at Than Phu market, stealing 7 gold chains and additional silver jewelry, which he sold for 65 million VND.

His final theft occurred on July 21, 2025, at Thanh 41 gold shop in VY Da market, where he stole approximately 700 pieces of jewelry made from various types of gold (12K, 14K, 18K, 24K), with a total value of over 4.9 billion VND. After the thefts, Nhat sold 19 types of stolen gold jewelry at a shop in Dong Ha market, Quang Tri province, for 286 million VND before being apprehended by authorities.

The total value of the assets Nhat stole across the three incidents was determined to be over 5 billion VND.
