International Mathematics Olympiad 2026 Set to Take Place in Shanghai

The International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) 2026 is scheduled to take place in Shanghai, China, from July 13 to July 21, 2026. This prestigious competition will see participation from nearly 700 contestants representing 119 countries and territories, making it the largest gathering in the event's 67-year history.

The Vietnamese team consists of six talented students: Phan Dang Nguyen from Hanoi - Amsterdam High School, Nguyen Hoang Phuong from Phan Boi Chau High School in Nghe An, Tran Dai Thanh Danh from the National University of Ho Chi Minh City, Nguyen Dinh Tung from the National University of Hanoi, Ha Manh Hung from Hanoi - Amsterdam High School, and Nguyen Le Nhat Nam from Hanoi National University of Education.

The official competition days are set for July 15 and 16, during which participants will tackle three problems in a span of 4.5 hours each day. Each problem carries a maximum score of 7 points. Contestants have the option to receive the exam paper in their native language, provided they register in advance and receive approval from the organizers.

Medals will be awarded based on the total scores from the two exam days, with approximately 50% of participants expected to receive gold, silver, or bronze medals. Vietnam has been participating in the IMO since 1974 and last year, the Vietnamese students achieved remarkable success, winning two gold medals, three silver medals, and one bronze medal, placing ninth among 110 teams globally.

Prominent mathematician Professor Ngo Bao Chau met with the six Vietnamese contestants prior to their departure to China, offering encouragement and support as they prepare for this challenging competition.
