Police Warn Citizens About Recent Money Transfer Scam
Authorities in Phu Tho have issued a warning regarding a money transfer scam involving fake offers of gifts

The Hanoi Police have recently alerted the public about a scam involving fraudulent video calls made through the Zalo messaging app. On October 1, 2026, a resident named D.V.N received a video call from someone claiming to be Trần Thanh Tùng, an officer from the Hanoi Police. The scammer falsely informed Mr. N that he was implicated in a money laundering case and demanded that he prove his innocence.
To instill fear and gain Mr. N's trust, the scammer requested sensitive information, including bank account details and two savings books totaling over 2 billion VND. The scammer instructed Mr. N to withdraw all his savings and transfer the money to a specified account under the pretense of aiding an investigation, promising to return the funds afterward.
Feeling anxious and believing he was communicating with an actual police officer, Mr. N was on his way to the bank when he decided to verify the information at the local police station. Officer Trương Đình Quân, the security team leader, reassured Mr. N and explained the fraudulent tactics used by the scammer. Thanks to this timely intervention, Mr. N realized he was being scammed and halted his plans to transfer the money, successfully protecting his savings.
In light of this incident, the Hanoi Police have issued a warning to the public to remain vigilant against impersonation scams. They emphasized that law enforcement agencies do not require individuals to transfer money for investigations or verifications. Residents are urged to directly contact official agencies or use verified communication channels for any inquiries.
Furthermore, people are advised not to share personal information, bank account details, or any sensitive documents with unknown individuals, especially through phone calls or social media. If anyone receives suspicious calls or messages, they should remain calm, refrain from complying with demands, and report the incident to the nearest police station for guidance and support.
