Publisher Director and Two Others Arrested Over Controversial Book

The director of the Writers' Association Publishing House in Hanoi, Nguyen Thuy Hang, has been charged with violations concerning the book titled 'Talking with Thanh - A New Account of Light'. On July 15, the Hanoi Police announced that the city's Security Investigation Agency had formally arrested Hang, 50, along with Dao Ba Doan, 55, the deputy director and editor-in-chief of the publishing house, and Nguyen Van Yen, 64, the head of the editorial board. They are being investigated for producing, storing, distributing, or propagating information, documents, or items aimed at opposing the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, as per Article 117 of the Penal Code.

This development comes as the Security Investigation Agency continues its investigation into the aforementioned book and several videos identified as containing illegal content. Authorities believe that the three suspects engaged in editing, revising, publishing, and promoting the book. According to a report from VTV, the suspect Doan, in his role as editor-in-chief, along with Yen, was responsible for reviewing and editing the book's content. From June to the end of September 2025, the two were involved in reading, editing, and revising the manuscript.

In January 2026, the Writers' Association Publishing House signed a publishing cooperation contract with Nguyen Thanh Nam, who paid one billion VND to the publishing house. This included 120 million VND allocated for those directly involved in editing the manuscript, nearly 280 million VND for printing, advertising, and launching the book, while over 600 million VND remains in the publisher's cash fund, as reported by VTV.

Prior to this, on July 7, the Hanoi Police had also arrested Nam, 65, and Tran Viet Anh, 33, under the same charge of Article 117. The investigation agency believes that Nam and Viet Anh engaged in actions to produce, store, and disseminate materials that distort the history of various revolutions, as well as the policies and guidelines of the Party and State. They are also accused of insulting prominent leaders, including President Ho Chi Minh and General Vo Nguyen Giap.
