Top Student in Ho Chi Minh City Thrives Without Extra Classes

Nguyen Dang Phuc, a student from Hong Ngoc Primary and Secondary School, has made headlines as the top scorer in the 2026 10th-grade entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City. With a total score of 28.75, including perfect scores in Mathematics and English, Phuc's achievement is impressive, especially considering his laid-back approach to studying.

On June 19, when the results were announced, Phuc was pleasantly surprised to learn he topped the city. He also secured spots in the specialized Mathematics classes at both Tran Dai Nghia High School and the National University of Ho Chi Minh City’s High School for Gifted Students.

Contrary to the stereotype of a top student buried in books, Phuc maintained a relatively relaxed study schedule. Outside of school hours, he dedicated only 1-2 hours each evening to review his lessons, spending the rest of his time with family and engaging in sports. Unlike many of his peers who indulge in video games, Phuc chose to focus on his studies and spent time with a close-knit group of friends who share his passion for Mathematics. This group has supported him through various academic competitions over the years.

As he prepared for the entrance exam, Phuc participated in just one mock exam before the official test, yet he still exceeded expectations. He felt the most pressure regarding the Mathematics and Literature subjects, but he quickly shifted his focus to concentration once the exam began. He completed the English test in about 30 minutes and used the remaining time to double-check his answers. His performance in Mathematics was similarly smooth, leaving him with extra minutes to review before submitting his paper. In Literature, he wrote approximately seven pages, often studying in groups with friends to refine his writing skills.

Phuc’s accomplishments extend beyond the entrance exam; he has also achieved an IELTS score of 6.5, won second place in the city-level Casio calculator mathematics competition, and earned numerous awards in various academic contests.

His father, Nguyen Dang Tam, expressed immense pride not only in his son’s title as top student but also in his personal growth throughout his academic journey. Tam noted that Phuc has developed a strong sense of responsibility and independence in managing his study schedule without pressure from his family. Even when Phuc was accepted into two prestigious schools, his parents allowed him time to make his decision without interference.

Nguyen Thi Thuy, the principal of Phuc’s school, emphasized the importance of building a solid knowledge foundation rather than pressuring students to accelerate their studies at the last minute. This supportive environment, combined with family encouragement, has contributed to Phuc’s success.

Looking ahead, Phuc views his title as just a milestone in his educational journey. He plans to take a few days to consider which specialized school to attend and has aspirations of becoming a doctor, inspired by his parents' careers in the medical field. He believes that a career in medicine not only brings personal success but also allows him to contribute positively to society.
