Vietnam sees a staggering record of new Covid-19 cases

HCMC - The Ministry of Health tonight, May 15, reported 131 new Covid-19 cases, including two imported cases and 129 locally-infected ones at quarantine facilities and lockdown areas, taking the day’s total number of infections to 169, which is the record number of new cases in a single day.

Among the latest community-transmitted infections, Bac Giang Province recorded the largest number at 85, followed by Bac Ninh at 16 cases. Hanoi-based K Hospital reported 13 cases, while Danang City had eight new cases, Vinh Phuc had four, Lang Son had two and Nam Dinh had one.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, Vietnam has seen 3,985 Covid-19 cases, with 2,522 locally-infected ones.

Concluding a meeting with the Ministry of Health today, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said that State agencies, firms and residents should not be negligent in the fight against Covid-19. The country must be determined to successfully ward off the coronavirus and consider protecting the health of residents the top priority.

Provinces and cities were told to boost Covid-19 testing and contact tracing to promptly detect Covid-19 cases.

The prime minister also told the Ministry of Health to access Covid-19 vaccines as soon as possible to ensure the vaccination programs can run smoothly.

In related news, due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases in Bac Ninh, the provincial government decided to begin social distancing in the entire Yen Phong District from 2.00 p.m. today in line with the prime minister’s Directive 15 to effectively prevent the spread of Covid-19.

On May 9, the province started social distancing for Thuan Thanh District, the local media reported.

In another development, Ha Nam Province ordered the temporary shutdown of golf courses from 11.a.m. due to a high risk of Covid-19 infections, and asked competent agencies to adopt aggressive safety measures until further notice.

The province’s departments, agencies and districts were told to regularly check the compliance with Covid-19 safety protocols and impose harsh sanctions on those who violate anti-Covid-19 regulations.

On May 4, Ha Nam Province suspended events that attract many people and the operations of street food stalls to curb the spread of Covid-19.
