HCMC – The border guard forces in the island city of Phu Quoc in Kien Giang Province today, April 22, captured four Vietnamese citizens who had entered Phu Quoc from Cambodia on a barge to escape the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the forces, the group of people moved to Cambodia to look for jobs over a year ago. As the pandemic is at its peak in Cambodia, they sought ways to return home.

In the afternoon on April 21, Tran Van Tan, aged 53, steered a boat towing the barge to transport three persons, aged from 30 to 40 and residing in the Dong Thap and An Giang provinces, from Koh Rong Island in the Cambodian province of Sihanoukville to Phu Quoc.

At around 4 a.m. today, they were caught by the forces when they were near the An Thoi port.

The forces took them to the Phu Quoc Medical Center for quarantine and Covid-19 testing.

Data from the provincial government showed that this Mekong Delta province has detected over 140 cases that entered the locality illegally since February 20 this year. On April 19, five women were arrested by the border guard forces after they hired a canoe to enter the island city illegally.
