HCMC – As many as 221 employees of Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi have resigned from their jobs over the past year, said Professor Dr Nguyen Quang Tuan, director of the hospital, attributing the trend to Covid-19 and the hospital’s personnel rearrangement.

Of the total, there are 28 doctors and some holders of PhD degrees and associate professor titles and 113 unskilled workers.

According to Dr. Do Van Thanh, head of the hospital’s personnel department, Covid-19 has caused a great impact on the hospital. It earlier had 5,000-5,500 inpatients and 6,000-7,000 outpatients a day on average. However, the number of inpatients has plunged to over 1,000. Its revenue has tumbled VND2 trillion, or 30%, over 2019, affecting the incomes of the employees at the hospital.

Due to high pressure and low incomes, many employees have moved to other units with higher incomes. The trend is indispensable and the hospital could not retain them, Thanh said, affirming that the issue was normal and could not be attributed to brain drain.

In addition, as the hospital has been given complete financial autonomy, some units have become unnecessary, such as those in charge of holding funeral ceremonies, controlling vehicles and transporting patients, so the hospital was forced to end contracts with 61 employees in these units and has compensated them with two-month salaries.

Earlier, the hospital had 10 pharmacies but the figure is now five, so 51 other employees have also been reduced.

Moreover, many employees of the hospital were under high pressure due to Covid-19 and investigations into ex-leaders of the hospital.

Thanh denied the news that the hospital fails to pay the salaries of employees on time.

Although 22 employees have resigned, the hospital has recruited over 500 new high-skilled ones. At present, the hospital comprises 4,300 employees.

The hospital has also restructured some activities, dissolved poor-performing units as well as merged and split some departments.

Bach Mai Hospital was given full financial autonomy in 2020, when Covid-19 broke out and caused multiple difficulties. From late March to mid-April last year, it was put under lockdown. In September last year, former director and deputy director of the hospital were arrested for their alleged price gouging of medical equipment from VND7.4 billion to VND39 billion.
