HCMC – The number of new hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) cases, which are common among children, is forecast to increase sharply in HCMC between April and June, said experts.

Since the start of this week, the number of HFMD cases at the Children’s Hospital No. 1 has risen, Nguoi Lao Dong Online reported.

These days, the number of cases has surged to 40 each day, doubling the figure seen on previous days, said Dr Truong Huu Khanh, head of the Infectious Disease and Neurology Department at the hospital.

On April 6, among the cases receiving treatment at the department, seven HFMD patients took a turn for the worse, so they are being monitored in the emergency room.

Dr Nguyen Minh Tien at the HCMC Children’s Hospital also said that the HFMD was at its peak.

Since mid-March, the hospital has admitted some 40 children infected with HFMD, with two of them being on a ventilator.

Dr Khanh also advised parents to take their children who are infected with the disease to hospitals for immediate treatment if their conditions worsen.
