Sony and Marvel’s latest film, 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day,' has made a significant impact at the box office, raking in an estimated $355 million during its opening weekend. This impressive figure places it as the second-highest domestic debut in cinematic history, just behind the record set by 'Avengers: Endgame' in 2019, which debuted at $357 million.
The film's opening weekend was bolstered by record-breaking Thursday preview sales, contributing to a staggering $169.3 million on Friday, which included presales. Saturday saw the film earn an additional $101.5 million, with projections suggesting an $84 million haul for Sunday, bringing the total to an estimated $355 million. Final box office numbers will be confirmed on Monday.
'Brand New Day' is only the second film to surpass the $300 million mark during a domestic opening weekend, a feat previously achieved only by 'Avengers: Endgame.' Internationally, the film also performed well, grossing an additional $572 million, including $121 million from China, leading to a global opening total of approximately $927 million.
Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak, commented on the significance of this opening, stating, "What this means for movie theaters cannot be overstated. This sets up an incredible month of August and increases the likelihood that this summer will be the biggest in terms of revenue since 2019, surpassing the benchmark $4 billion threshold." An estimated 24.1 million moviegoers attended screenings in the U.S. and Canada.
Interestingly, 'Brand New Day' did not have the advantage of an IMAX release, which was reserved for Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey.' However, other premium formats thrived, with Dolby Cinema achieving its highest-grossing domestic weekend ever at $10 million. Screen X and 4DX also set domestic records with $7 million and $5.2 million in ticket sales, respectively.
Kevin Feige, a producer on the film and president of Marvel Studios, expressed gratitude to the audiences, stating, "This is a truly phenomenal opening, and we are grateful to audiences everywhere for coming out and experiencing our film the way it was meant to be seen. This debut reflects the enduring power of Marvel’s characters, and the connection they continue to have with fans around the world — and, as audiences saw, it sets up exciting things to come."
