Gold prices in Vietnam have seen a notable decrease, with each tael dropping by one million dong, now priced at approximately 146 million dong. This price reflects a gap of about nine million dong compared to international rates. On September 21, Saigon Jewelry Company (SJC) listed its gold prices at 143.6 - 146.6 million dong per tael, marking a decline of one million dong since the morning opening. Meanwhile, Mi Hong reported gold prices at 143.7 - 145.2 million dong per tael.
The price of plain gold rings at SJC also fell within a similar range, now priced at 143.1 - 146.1 million dong per tael. At the same time, the price for rings at DOJI Jewelry Group was listed at 143.1 - 147.1 million dong per tael, indicating a higher buying and selling price compared to the market. Mi Hong's plain rings were bought and sold at 143.7 - 145.2 million dong per tael.
On the international market, spot gold prices dropped by over 25 USD per ounce, equivalent to nearly 0.6% in the past 24 hours. As of 2 PM Hanoi time, the precious metal was trading around 4,353 USD per ounce, which translates to approximately 137.5 million dong per tael when converted at the selling rate of Vietcombank (excluding taxes and fees). Currently, the price difference between domestic and international gold stands at around nine million dong per tael.
Over the past month, domestic gold prices have generally traded below 150 million dong per tael. Compared to the peak of 191 million dong set in early March, current prices are down by 44 million dong, or 23%. Year-to-date, gold prices have decreased by about 6%, reflecting a 4% decline overall.
The recent interest rate hike by the U.S. Federal Reserve theoretically poses challenges for precious metals. However, on September 18, the Director of Global Market and Economic Research at UOB (Singapore) stated that the latest Fed actions did not alter previous forecasts for gold prices. UOB experts believe that long-term gold prices will continue to be supported by a weakening USD, central banks' diversification of reserves, and strong jewelry demand, particularly from India and China.
"We believe the market has formed a temporary bottom around 4,000 USD per ounce," UOB forecasts. They predict gold prices could reach 4,500 USD per ounce in the fourth quarter of this year, increasing to 4,800 USD in the first quarter of 2027, 5,100 USD in the second quarter, and 5,400 USD in the third quarter of next year.
In the foreign exchange market, the State Bank announced a central exchange rate of 25,637 dong, unchanged from the previous weekend. USD prices at commercial banks remained stable, with Vietcombank listing rates at 25,790 - 26,200 dong per USD. In the free market, USD prices at some currency exchange points also stabilized, selling around 26,000 dong per USD.
