Agri Index introduces rice exchange project
CANTHO – Agri Index has introduced a project to set up an exchange for rice and rice by-products made
The University of Can Tho and the Global Crop Diversity Trust held a seminar on the biodiversity for opportunities, livelihoods and development in Vietnam on March 13 in Can Tho City to discuss researching and creating high-yield rice.
Norway will fund US$477,460, while the University of Can Tho’s reciprocal funding will be US$310,000, it was announced at the seminar.
The project on biodiversity for opportunities, livelihoods and development in Vietnam is intended to develop new rice populations, create genetic diversity in rice and, at the same time, produce high-yield rice adapting to climate change.
In 2023-2024, hybrid rice will be planted on a trial basis in some provinces of the Mekong Delta, northern upland and central regions such as Lao Cai, Phu Yen, Gia Lai, Can Tho and Vinh Long provinces.
The project will also focus on researching solutions to save natural resources, such as changing the crop structure, reducing greenhouse gas emissions; building an information system to have accurate and timely weather forecasts; and training farmers and agriculture officials on seed selection methods and cultivation technology appropriate to specific regions.
