Samsung and SK Hynix Shares Surge Amid AI Optimism

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, two of South Korea's leading chip manufacturers, experienced remarkable stock increases on Friday, with Samsung soaring more than 20% and SK Hynix climbing over 25%. This surge comes in the wake of a significant rally in U.S. technology stocks, particularly after strong earnings reports from Amazon and Microsoft, which reignited optimism surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) spending.

The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) also saw a robust gain of more than 8% overnight, reflecting renewed investor interest in AI-linked chipmakers. The positive sentiment was fueled by Amazon’s second-quarter revenue exceeding analysts' expectations, largely due to the continued strength of its cloud-computing segment. Similarly, Microsoft reported faster-than-expected growth in its Azure cloud services, further bolstering confidence in AI infrastructure investments.

Andrew Jackson, head of equity strategy at Ortus Advisors, noted that Microsoft’s impressive quarterly results sparked a significant rebound in technology stocks, reversing the recent downturn that had affected semiconductor shares. He emphasized that the market's reaction indicated a shift away from a 'spend at all costs' mentality, which had previously been punished by investors.

In addition to the gains by Samsung and SK Hynix, other companies in the semiconductor sector also saw substantial increases. LG Innotek advanced by 11.2%, while Seoul Semiconductor rose by 7.8%. Japanese chip stocks also rallied, with Advantest climbing nearly 18% and Tokyo Electron gaining almost 9%.

This rally marks a notable turnaround from earlier in the week when semiconductor stocks faced a sell-off due to concerns over high valuations and increasing competition from Chinese memory chipmakers. The latest developments suggest a robust recovery in the tech sector, driven by strong fundamentals and a positive outlook for AI-related technologies.
