Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has issued a warning regarding the likelihood of intensified Russian provocations at Ukraine's border crossings with European nations. This statement follows two alarming incidents this week involving drone strikes that resulted in fatalities and raised significant security concerns.

On Tuesday night, Russian drones targeted the Starokozache border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova, leading to the deaths of two individuals. The following night, a potential threat to a Polish-Ukrainian crossing point was narrowly avoided, thanks to effective cooperation between Warsaw and Kyiv. Tusk did not provide specific details or evidence linking Russia to these incidents but emphasized the seriousness of the situation.

During a meeting in Bratislava, Slovakia, Tusk shared insights from a briefing by CIA Director Jim Ratcliffe, who recently visited Moscow. Tusk indicated that Russia has already begun provocative attacks on border crossings, particularly in Moldova, and similar actions could be expected at crossings with Ukraine in other countries, including Poland.

“We expect various scenarios on the Russian-Ukrainian front and in the countries on the European Union’s eastern flank,” Tusk stated. Ukraine shares borders with several countries, including Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova, all of which could be affected by escalating tensions.

In recent weeks, Moldova has experienced multiple incidents near its southern border with Ukraine, including explosions and drone sightings. On August 20, an explosion occurred near the Giurgiulesti border crossing, and subsequent investigations revealed debris from Russian drones. Following these events, Moldova's President Maia Sandu condemned Russia's actions, stating that the ongoing conflict poses a direct threat to her country.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also reported damage to border crossings with NATO-member Romania, further highlighting the precarious situation. Romania has noted a significant increase in drone incursions this year, raising alarms about regional security.

Tusk has been vocal about the potential for limited military or hybrid provocations from Russia targeting Poland or the Baltic states. His recent comments reflect ongoing concerns about the security landscape in Eastern Europe and the need for preparedness among NATO allies.

In response to these threats, Poland has been actively seeking to host a permanent U.S. military base as a deterrent against Russian aggression. High-level discussions with U.S. officials continue as Poland aims to strengthen its defense capabilities amid rising tensions in the region.
