Going to Luc Ngan to pick lychee

In the summer, if Moc Chau has the experience of picking plums, Bac Giang also has the experience of picking lychees and enjoying them in the garden.

Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuong (22 years old) early June 13 and her friends rode a motorbike for about two hours from Hanoi to pick lychees at the garden in Dong Giao village, Quy Son commune, Luc Ngan district. For the first time, Thuong was able to admire a litchi garden with a large area of about 5 hectares, with lychee trees 5-10 m high, raspberry-shaped canopy, planted in rows. The lychee tree has many leaves, so the fruit cannot be seen from a distance. But when he approached, the bunches of lychee were almost fully ripe. Some branches are heavy, must use sticks so that the fruit does not touch the ground, to avoid causing rot and damage.

Luc Ngan and Tan Yen are two key lychee growing districts of the “litchi capital” of nearly 30,000 hectares of Bac Giang. In April 2023, the Asian Records Organization established Luc Ngan lychee on the list of Vietnamese specialties that achieved an Asian record according to the set of Asian culinary value criteria. Coming to the Luc Ngan district, visitors can easily see the rolling hills, neatly planned. Every year, at this time, the roads in Luc Ngan are dyed red by trucks carrying harvested cloth.

The form of garden tourism in the litchi season is promoted by Bac Giang province to promote and consume lychee. Currently, the whole Luc Ngan district has more than 200 cooperatives (cooperatives) growing litchi, welcoming visitors, and providing food, accommodation and entertainment services for visitors. Tours in the Luc Ngan district will combine experiencing lychee gardens and visiting scenic spots such as Cam Son lake, Khuon Than lake, Am Vai pagoda, streams and mountains.

“I just pick up the camera and then peel off the cloth to eat. The fruit is thick, ivory white. Biting into the feeling of being flooded, sweet and fragrant, makes me want to ‘cup’ the whole weight but I have to hold back because I’m afraid of the heat.” Thuong shared his experience in the lychee garden.

Lychee branches lie low, so just raise your hand to be able to pick the fruit. The large, bright red lychee, seen with the naked eye or photographed, are outstanding.

Thuong said enjoying lychee at the garden is more interesting and delicious than eating fruit bought at the market or in the supermarket. Fresh lychees eaten in the garden will taste lighter and sweeter, while lychees bought from outside have a slightly sour taste.

The experience of picking lychees at Luc Ngan gives Thuong the same feeling as about the Western gardens picking fruit. “Going to the garden to pick lychees, you can both eat fruit and have beautiful check-in photos. If you can hang a hammock lying under the litchi trees, reaching up to be able to cut the fruit to eat is even better”, Thuong shared.

Thuong also bought fabric as a gift. A kilo of lychee bought at the garden costs 30,000 VND, and buying from 20 kg or more costs 20,000 VND. Previously, Thuong bought an entrance ticket of 60,000 VND.

According to Thuong, this is a suitable experience on the weekend, you can go home during the day. The most reasonable time to visit lychee season is in the morning, but note that you should eat breakfast before eating lychee. Eating lychee on an empty stomach causes the sugar in the body to rise suddenly, easily leading to the phenomenon of “clothes drunk”, dizziness, dizziness, nausea. Thuong himself also suffered from stomach ulcers after eating lychee, so the group rested and had an early lunch. According to the web portal of Bac Giang Department of Health, when eating litchi, adults should not eat more than 10 fruits, children should only eat 3-4 fruits. When drunk, drink a glass of sugar water to improve the situation.

A representative of the lychee garden where the merchant experiences said that the lychee picking activity attracts guests of all ages, both domestic and foreign guests, self-sufficient groups of guests or companies and agencies coming to organize team building. Weekends are the time when the number of tourists is the most, estimated at an average of 500 – 1,000 visitors.

About the next 10 days, litchi in gardens and hills will be fully ripe. The lychee season only lasts for about 2-3 weeks. Most tours are only held during this time, which is the peak of the lychee season, so visitors need to take advantage of time to experience. Near the end of July, the lychee season will come to an end.

According to a representative of Thanh Hai Commune Experiential Tourism Cooperative (Garden Viet) in Bong 2 village, Thanh Hai commune, Luc Ngan district, Bac Giang province, in addition to picking lychees, visitors can experience camping at the lychee garden; join the night lychee picking tour at 1-2am with local people; take a boat to take pictures, visit the litchi islands on the lake; participate in harvesting beeswax, collecting honey and handmade lychee flowers with local people.

In addition, visitors can enjoy famous local specialties such as hill chicken, horse spring rolls, noodle soup, fish and shrimp, lychee honey, and lychee-based dishes and drinks.
