According to Mr. Thang, who has 20 years of experience in Dong Tao chicken farming: “True Dong Tao purebred lines have only 2 types of legs: Red flesh scales and dragon scales (or called skeletal scales)”.
Another special feature to identify purebred Dong Tao chicken is that the right leg is round, the leg grows with the time of raising, not growing disgruntled from the young. The toes of chickens are short and fat.

Mr. Thang said that the trend of buying Dong Tao chicken as gifts has just emerged since about ten years, when the economy develops, many people have the opportunity to find unique, strange and beautiful things to enjoy Tet.
Previously, in Dong Tao commune up to 90% of households raised chickens and used them mainly for food, did not think about preserving genes. In 2016, Mr. Thang and 16 households in the commune linked to and established Dong Tao chicken cooperative.
