Draconids Meteor Shower Set to Dazzle Tonight

Draconids Meteor Shower Set to Dazzle Tonight

The Draconids meteor shower, often referred to as the 'dragon's tail' due to its radiant point in the constellation Draco, is set to light up the night sky starting tonight, October 6. This annual meteor shower runs from October 6 to October 10, with the peak expected on the nights of October 8 and 9. Stargazers in Vietnam and other parts of the Northern Hemisphere can look forward to witnessing this unique celestial event.

Draco, the constellation from which the Draconids emanate, is easily visible in the northern sky, particularly during this time of year. The radiant point of the meteor shower is located near the stars Eltanin and Rastaban, making it a prominent feature for observers. The Draconids are known for their unpredictable nature; while they typically produce around 5 to 10 meteors per hour, past events have seen spectacular bursts of activity, with thousands of meteors visible in certain years, such as 1933 and 1946.

This year, conditions are particularly favorable for viewing the Draconids. According to the Hanoi Astronomy Association (HAS), there will be minimal moonlight interference, as the new moon occurs on October 10. This means that the sky will be much darker during the peak nights, enhancing the visibility of the meteors.

As the Draconids begin to fall from the 'tail of the cosmic dragon,' enthusiasts are encouraged to observe the sky after midnight, looking towards the eastern horizon before dawn. Following the Draconids, stargazers can anticipate the Orionids meteor shower, which will peak on October 21, providing another opportunity to enjoy the wonders of the night sky.
