Heavy Steel Block Falls in Ho Chi Minh City, Disrupting Traffic

On October 6, 2023, at approximately 4:15 PM, a heavy steel block from the Xuyen Tam project collapsed onto Bui Huu Nghia Street in Ho Chi Minh City, creating a loud noise that startled nearby residents. The incident caused a major traffic disruption in the area.

Residents reported feeling the ground shake as the block, weighing several tons, fell across the road. Trần Văn Năm, a local resident, expressed his shock at the event, stating, "The loud noise shook my house. I ran outside to see the steel block lying across the road. Fortunately, no vehicles were passing at that moment, which could have led to a serious accident."

Emergency services and contractors arrived at the scene about 30 minutes after the incident to cordon off the area and direct traffic away from the blockage. Thankfully, there were no injuries or damage to property reported as a result of the incident.

A representative from the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Infrastructure Management Board, the project's investor, explained that the steel block was part of a cement soil reinforcement machine, which was one of eight newly delivered machines intended to expedite construction. The accident occurred during the assembly phase, prior to the machine being officially operational. Initial investigations suggest that a broken axle caused the entire assembly to topple onto the road.

The project aims to dredge and improve the environment of the Xuyen Tam canal, addressing pollution and flooding issues in the area. The contractor has committed to a thorough review of safety protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.

By 6:30 PM, heavy machinery was deployed to remove the fallen steel block, and authorities worked diligently to restore normal traffic flow on Bui Huu Nghia Street.
