In Vinh Long province, elderly citizens are stepping up to make significant contributions to community development, embodying the spirit of the motto 'Elderly Age, Bright Example'. Thousands of elderly members are actively participating in socio-economic development and environmental protection efforts, helping to beautify their hometowns.

As the population ages rapidly, the elderly in Vinh Long are not just beneficiaries of social welfare policies; they are proving to be a valuable resource. In Tan Long Hoi commune, the local elderly association has played a crucial role in maintaining clean and beautiful rural roads. Despite their advanced age, these dedicated individuals regularly join community clean-up efforts, meticulously cutting grass, collecting waste, and planting flowers along the roadsides.

Nguyen Van Sen, a prominent member of the local elderly association, expressed his joy at contributing to the community, stating, 'Even though we are older and not as strong as before, we are happy to see our hometown changing for the better. Simple tasks like cleaning the roads not only help us stay active but also set an example for our children. As long as we have strength, we will continue to contribute to a clean and beautiful environment.'

The 'Elderly Age, Bright Example' initiative goes beyond just environmental maintenance. In Tan Long Hoi, there are 2,711 elderly individuals, with over 364 achieving recognition for their successful businesses, earning an income of over 50 million VND per year. Many elderly-led economic models, such as growing green grapefruit, durian, and coconut, have proven to be highly effective, creating jobs for local workers.

Additionally, the elderly have successfully mediated over 175 disputes in their communities, helping to maintain peace and order. Mai Minh Luat, the president of the elderly association in Tan Long Hoi, emphasized the importance of the 'Elderly Age, Bright Example' movement, noting that the simple actions of the elderly not only transform rural landscapes but also foster a strong sense of community responsibility.

On September 29, the Vinh Long People's Committee, in collaboration with the Department of Health and other relevant agencies, launched the 'Action Month for the Elderly in Vietnam 2026', under the theme 'Community Together Caring for the Elderly in the Context of Population Aging'. This initiative aims to enhance the care and support for the elderly, ensuring they continue to play an active role in society.

During the event, Nguyen Hoang Nam, Deputy Chairman of the Long Chau People's Committee, reiterated the commitment to caring for the elderly, stating that it is a collective responsibility that requires the involvement of the entire political system and society. The local government has introduced a community activity model specifically for the elderly, emphasizing the need for families, local authorities, and healthcare providers to work together in support of the elderly.

As of now, Vinh Long province has over 703,322 elderly individuals, making up 20.21% of the population, with a significant portion living in rural areas. The province has allocated social assistance to over 126,000 elderly individuals, with a budget exceeding 623 billion VND annually. More than 91% of the elderly have health insurance, and over 71% have electronic health management records.

Nguyen Thi Be Muoi, Vice Chairwoman of the Vinh Long People's Committee, stressed the importance of ongoing support for the elderly, calling for families to show more love and care for their elders. She encouraged all sectors of society to take concrete actions to ensure that the elderly are respected, cared for, and able to contribute meaningfully to their communities.
