Italian Woman Stays in Ha Giang for Love

Italian Woman Stays in Ha Giang for Love

Karin Di Paola, a 21-year-old woman from Veneto, Italy, has made the life-changing decision to stay in Ha Giang, Vietnam, due to her love for Lục Thế Khải, a 26-year-old homestay owner. Karin's journey to Vietnam was inspired by her mother's stories of the country, where she had volunteered in the 1990s. Captivated by the stunning landscapes of Ha Giang, Karin aimed to conquer the famous Ha Giang Loop during her trip in April 2025.

Upon arriving, she stayed at Khải's homestay, located about five kilometers from the city center. Their first interaction was marked by a language barrier, as Khải's limited English made him shy. However, Karin found him charming, and they communicated using a translation app. Their connection deepened when Karin fell ill shortly after her arrival, prompting Khải to take care of her by checking in frequently and providing meals.

As Karin recovered, the two spent hours discussing their lives and cultures, leading to their first kiss and a mutual declaration of feelings. Despite knowing they might only share a brief moment together, their bond grew stronger. After a week apart, when Karin traveled to Cao Bằng, she realized she missed Khải and decided to return to Ha Giang. Khải expressed his feelings, saying, 'My heart has decided you are the woman of my life.'

Upon her return, they explored the region together, and their relationship flourished. Over the past year, they traveled extensively throughout Vietnam, with Karin helping Khải improve his English, enabling him to engage with international guests. However, their love story has not been without challenges, as they navigate cultural differences in expressing affection.

Karin noted that while Italians often express emotions verbally, Vietnamese people tend to show love through actions. This cultural nuance initially led to misunderstandings, but as their relationship deepened, they learned to appreciate each other's ways of showing care. In January, after a personal loss, Khải's unwavering support helped Karin realize his reliability and deepened her understanding of Vietnamese expressions of love.

Both families support their relationship; Khải's parents have embraced Karin warmly, while her mother, Daniela, initially worried but ultimately respected her daughter's choices. In June, Daniela visited Vietnam with her husband to meet Khải, and they were impressed by his kindness and openness.

Currently, Karin lives in Ha Giang, where she and Khải are working together to develop the homestay business and plan for their future together. They have created a digital content channel to share their experiences, love story, and cultural differences, hoping to inspire young people to pursue love and overcome challenges together. 'I am always grateful to Karin for having the courage to come back, so in this life, we won't miss each other,' Khải expressed.
