On September 7, Russia and North Korea celebrated the inauguration of their first road bridge, a significant development in their bilateral relations. The bridge, which crosses the Tumen River, is viewed as a crucial milestone in the strategic partnership between the two neighboring countries.

According to the Russian state news agency TASS, the new bridge is located near the existing Friendship Bridge, a railway bridge that has been in operation since 1959, shortly after the Korean War. This new infrastructure is expected to facilitate year-round transportation between Russia and North Korea, enhancing connectivity in various sectors.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, speaking via video link during the inauguration ceremony, emphasized that the bridge would foster the development of relations between the two nations across multiple areas, including tourism. He stated, "I believe that expanding cross-border transport infrastructure will provide a strong impetus for further development of trade, economic, scientific, technological, and cultural cooperation."

The bridge is named after Yakov Novichenko, a Red Army officer who was honored as a Hero of Labor by North Korea. The total length of the bridge and its connecting routes is nearly 5 kilometers, with the bridge itself measuring approximately 1 kilometer. It features two lanes for vehicles.

Additionally, a new Khasan border checkpoint has been constructed, equipped with 10 lanes for vehicles. Once fully operational, this checkpoint is expected to handle up to 300 vehicles and over 2,300 people daily, according to the Russian government’s press office.

The construction of the bridge was discussed for several years, with formal agreements beginning in April of the previous year, following Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to North Korea in 2024. The strengthening of ties between Russia and North Korea has been evident through increased cooperation in various fields over recent years.
