As the Matching Day for surgical residents approaches, Dương Đức Hùng, the Director of Việt Đức Hospital, has delivered a significant message to young doctors. He urged them to think carefully before choosing to specialize in surgery, cautioning that many might later regret not opting for less demanding fields, such as dermatology, which can offer both financial rewards and a more relaxed lifestyle.

During a recent meeting with the candidates for the 51st cohort of surgical residents at the Hà Nội Medical University, Dương Đức Hùng shared insights about the rigorous training program. He stated, "We are not just training surgeons; we are cultivating true warriors, akin to special forces. After completing their residency at Việt Đức Hospital, these doctors will be equipped to handle any environment." He expressed concern over the current trend of the residency program becoming too commonplace, stating, "Excellence cannot be widespread. Our department will lead the way, returning to the core values of residency training, rather than following the crowd."

Dương Đức Hùng highlighted that the surgical department aims to admit only 15 residents for the upcoming cycle, emphasizing quality over quantity. He mentioned that the hospital has invested over 20 billion VND to create an optimal learning environment for residents, which includes covering their salaries and living expenses. However, he also made it clear that the standards will be stringent, and not all admitted residents will graduate if they do not meet the criteria.

The Matching Day, scheduled for September 9, is a pivotal moment for recent medical graduates who have passed one of the most challenging examinations to become residents. This day marks the beginning of a three-year journey that will define their medical careers. Dương Đức Hùng hopes that after three years, the residents will reflect positively on their choice to pursue surgical residency, rather than lamenting their decision.

With over 52 years of history in residency training in Vietnam, the program has produced thousands of qualified doctors. As of the end of 2025, Vietnam is expected to have trained a total of 8,441 residents, with an additional 1,276 expected to graduate in 2026. The Hà Nội Medical University and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City account for over 70% of annual graduates, offering more than 40 specialties.
