Định Hải, a celebrated poet and the author of the beloved children's song "This Earth is Ours," has died at the age of 89. His passing occurred on August 30, 2023, due to age-related health issues, as reported by fellow poet Trần Đăng Khoa. Định Hải had been bedridden for approximately ten years, receiving care from his wife and children.

Trần Đăng Khoa expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his longtime colleague and friend, recalling their close relationship that dates back to the 1960s. "The loss of Định Hải is irreplaceable," he said, reflecting on their shared history and mutual respect.

Born Nguyễn Biểu on June 6, 1937, in Thanh Hóa province, Định Hải faced significant challenges early in life, including the death of his father when he was just seven years old. Despite these hardships, he pursued education and eventually became a prominent figure in children's literature.

Throughout his career, Định Hải wrote extensively for children, creating works that have been included in Vietnamese school curricula from grades one to five. His most notable contributions include poems like "The Flower and the Bud," "If We Had a Miracle," and "The Song of the Earth," which resonate with themes of friendship and peace.

His famous poem "The Song of the Earth" was inspired by a memorable experience at an international children's camp in Germany in 1978, where he witnessed children of various backgrounds celebrating together. This moment motivated him to write verses that promote kindness and unity.

In 1979, musician Trương Quang Lục set the poem to music, creating a song that has become a staple in Vietnamese schools and children's programs. The song's uplifting melody and message of inclusivity have made it one of the most cherished children's songs in Vietnam.

Định Hải's literary legacy also includes a variety of other works, such as "The Little Kitten," "The Dragonfly," and many more, all of which showcase his unique ability to blend aesthetic beauty with educational values. In 2007, he was awarded the State Prize for Literature and Art for his contributions to children's literature.
