Chiikawa may appear small and adorable, but the character has proven to be a massive success at the box office. The animated feature film, titled Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island, has surpassed ¥10 billion (approximately $63 million) at the Japanese box office, achieving this milestone just 30 days after its release on July 24.

Based on the popular "Chiikawa" franchise created by artist Nagano, the film has attracted 7.66 million viewers by August 23, making it one of the summer's biggest hits. It opened in 447 theaters across Japan, including 65 IMAX screens, and made a remarkable ¥990 million on its opening day, ranking as the seventh-largest first-day gross in Japan's box office history. In just the first three days, the film grossed ¥2.24 billion.

Directed by Kei Oikawa, the story follows Chiikawa, a charming, genderless mouse-like character, along with its friends Hachiware and Usagi, as they embark on an adventure to a mysterious island after receiving an invitation to a special camp. Their journey takes a thrilling turn when they encounter a vengeful sea monster named Siren and her mermaid companions.

The film's impressive box office performance has led to an expansion of its theatrical experience. Starting September 5, Mermaid Island will be released in the immersive 4DX format, where audiences will enjoy shaking seats, gusts of air, and sprays of water synchronized with the characters' adventures.

Additionally, on September 11, interactive screenings will be held at seven theaters across five prefectures, allowing audiences to cheer for the characters and sing along with Siren's songs—an exciting departure from Japan's usual movie etiquette. Furthermore, on September 23, the same theaters will host screenings featuring glow sticks that change colors in sync with characters' actions on screen.

With 4DX experiences, singalong screenings, and glow-stick events on the horizon, it is evident that Chiikawa's appeal extends well beyond its social media roots.
