Tragic Crash in North Reading Claims Lives of Father and Daughter

A devastating car crash occurred in North Reading, Massachusetts, on Saturday night, resulting in the deaths of a man and a youth. The crash involved a speeding SUV driven by Matthew Sweeney, a 21-year-old from Paxton, who has since been charged with felony motor vehicle homicide, operating under the influence, and operating to endanger.

The incident unfolded around 10:45 p.m. when Sweeney's SUV collided with another vehicle at a stoplight, causing the latter to become engulfed in flames. Despite the efforts of first responders and a bystander who attempted to rescue the victims, both the adult male and the minor, identified by family as a girl about to start third grade at South School, tragically died at the scene.

The North Reading police and the Middlesex District Attorney's Office reported that the investigation into the crash is ongoing, and authorities have not disclosed what may have led to Sweeney's reckless speed before the collision.

In a statement, Andover Public Schools Superintendent Keith Taverna expressed condolences to the victims' family and announced that mental health support would be available for students affected by this tragic event. The school community is encouraged to seek assistance as they navigate the emotional impact of this loss.

The incident highlights the ongoing issues related to impaired and reckless driving, raising concerns about public safety on the roads. As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of two lives cut short in this horrific accident.
