The ongoing conflict in Ukraine is approaching a decisive phase, particularly in the cities of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, which have become central to the strategic goals of both Russia and Ukraine. Analysts suggest that these locations symbolize the survival and sovereignty of Ukraine in the Donbass region.

After five years of fierce fighting, the objectives of Moscow appear to have narrowed significantly. The Russian military's focus has shifted towards capturing these urban centers, which are critical to Ukraine's territorial integrity. President Vladimir Putin has acknowledged that his initial aim to overthrow the Kyiv government or control large portions of Ukraine is no longer feasible. Similarly, Ukraine has realized that fully restoring its 1991 borders is not achievable in the near term.

As diplomatic pressures from the U.S. push for negotiations by 2025, both sides have clarified their positions. The Kremlin expects Ukraine to relinquish control over the entire Donbass region and possibly parts of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. In contrast, Kyiv remains steadfast in its refusal to concede territory, fearing internal division and political instability.

Despite the slow progress of the Russian campaign in Donbass, reports indicate that Russian forces are edging closer to key cities, with hopes of surrounding Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.
