A 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit Kumamoto, Japan, on July 28, leading to extensive damage across the region. The quake struck at 4:27 PM local time, with its epicenter located inland at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers. Initial tsunami warnings were issued but were later lifted as aftershocks followed, including a notable 6.1 magnitude tremor at 5:08 PM.

The Aeon Mall in Kashima, Kumamoto, suffered severe damage, with reports indicating that dozens of people were trapped inside after the second floor collapsed. Eyewitness accounts described a loud explosion believed to have originated from the mall. Japanese broadcaster TBS reported a significant number of casualties, although local police have yet to confirm any fatalities.

As emergency responders gathered at the scene, it was reported that at least 12 houses had collapsed, and around 100 individuals were injured and transported to hospitals. According to Kyodo News, one person has been confirmed dead due to the building collapse.

Infrastructure damage was widespread, with the Kyushu Expressway experiencing breaks and the Shinkansen bullet train services temporarily suspended. Kumamoto Airport was also closed but resumed operations later that evening.

In addition to the mall, the Yatsushiro Shrine within the ancient Yatsushiro site was reported to have collapsed, along with several stone lanterns. A portion of the stone wall of the historic Kumamoto Castle was also damaged. Local resident Chiharu Hara expressed her fear during the earthquake, stating, "The office shook violently. I was afraid it would collapse. Everyone was panicking."

The Japanese Defense Minister announced the mobilization of 3,600 troops for disaster relief operations, along with 20 aircraft to assess damage from the air. The Nippon Paper Industries factory also reported significant damage, with several individuals missing from the site.

As rescue efforts continue, authorities are working to assess the full extent of the damage and provide assistance to those affected by this devastating earthquake.
