The Long Thanh Airport project, a significant infrastructure endeavor in Vietnam, is facing a labor shortage as it strives to meet construction deadlines. The investor has called for the mobilization of nearly 9,000 workers to expedite the project, which is currently lacking between 1,500 and 2,000 workers.

According to the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), the project's component three has achieved over 77% of the total contractual value. Currently, the site maintains an average of 7,170 direct workers. However, the recruitment of additional personnel has become a major challenge, particularly in key bidding packages.

Progress on various construction packages varies, with the passenger terminal package (5.10) reaching over 67% completion, while the internal transport package (4.8) is at nearly 65%. The cargo terminal package (7.8) has only achieved about 36%, and the parking garage package (11.5) is similarly behind at over 36% completion.

The working conditions at the Long Thanh Airport construction site are challenging, with many tasks taking place outdoors and being affected by harsh weather conditions, including heat and dust. This situation has made it difficult to attract and retain workers.

To ensure timely completion, ACV is urging contractors to increase their workforce, aiming for a total of nearly 9,000 direct workers, along with indirect support staff. Additionally, the contractors are advised to implement effective construction methods during the rainy season, which has previously caused delays of 2 to 4 months.

Preparations for the operational phase of Long Thanh Airport are also underway, with 257 personnel already recruited to facilitate the airport's launch. These staff members are currently gaining practical experience at Tan Son Nhat International Airport and the Long Thanh project site to prepare for the airport's expected operational start by the end of 2026.

Phase one of the Long Thanh Airport project includes the construction of two runways, one passenger terminal, and supporting facilities, with a capacity to handle 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo annually.
