Bùi Thanh Hiền, a 80-year-old woman from Vietnam, has dedicated her life to the memory of her beloved, Nguyễn Văn Khoán, who went missing during the Vietnam War nearly 60 years ago. On a recent morning, she visited Lê Thị Riêng Park in Ho Chi Minh City, carrying his photo as she joined others in honoring fallen soldiers.

Hiền and Khoán's love story began when they met in Hải Phòng, where both were young and hopeful. Their bond grew as they spent weekends together, exploring the countryside and sharing dreams of a future together. However, their lives took a tragic turn when Hiền enlisted in the Navy in 1966, just days after they captured their last joyful moment in a photograph.

In 1967, Khoán was drafted, and the couple exchanged letters filled with love and longing. Unfortunately, communication ceased in late 1968, leaving Hiền heartbroken and uncertain of Khoán's fate. Despite the pain of not knowing, she held onto hope that he was still alive, waiting for him to return.

As the years passed, Hiền learned to cope with the reality that Khoán might have perished in the war. She chose to honor his memory by never marrying, keeping her promise to wait for him. Over the decades, she carried his photo with her everywhere, feeling as though he was still by her side.

Recently, after hearing that authorities were searching for the remains of soldiers at Lê Thị Riêng Park, Hiền made the journey there. With a heavy heart, she expressed her desire for Khoán to know that his comrades had been found. "I hope that one day, he will return to me," she said, her voice filled with emotion.

At 80 years old and battling cancer, Hiền remains resolute in her commitment to Khoán's memory. She continues to travel around Vietnam, carrying his photo, symbolizing her undying love and the promise she made so many years ago. As she reflects on their unfulfilled dreams, she still holds onto the hope that one day, they will be reunited.
