Petrolimex Addresses Diesel Shortage Amid Rising Demand

Petrolimex, Vietnam's leading oil and gas company, has responded to growing concerns over a diesel fuel shortage affecting numerous retail outlets. Many gas stations have reported difficulties in sourcing diesel, leading to temporary closures in some locations.

According to reports, the company has seen an unprecedented spike in diesel demand, particularly in northern Vietnam. In July alone, daily consumption increased by 41.9% compared to the same period in 2022, with retail sales rising by 36.8% year-on-year. This surge has put immense pressure on the supply chain, particularly as global events, such as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, have disrupted oil supplies.

Retailers have expressed frustration, with one gas station owner in Quang Tri stating that they were only able to purchase gasoline while diesel supplies were nearly nonexistent. The owner reported that they previously sold around 200 cubic meters of diesel each month but were now unable to procure even 5 cubic meters.

Petrolimex has acknowledged the supply challenges, noting that the situation is exacerbated by delays in transportation and low profit margins for distributors. The company emphasized that while some stores may need to limit sales temporarily to manage supply, this is not indicative of a widespread shortage across their network.

In response to the crisis, Petrolimex is actively working to bolster its supply chain, including enhancing sourcing capabilities and adjusting inventory management practices to meet the heightened demand. The company has committed to prioritizing essential services and consumer needs while collaborating with regulatory bodies to stabilize the market.

On July 23, the Ministry of Industry and Trade issued a directive for local authorities to intensify monitoring of the fuel market, particularly diesel. They have mandated strict oversight of stock levels, supply sources, and pricing at retail outlets to prevent hoarding and ensure compliance with sales regulations.
