Bui Thi Cuc, born Tran Thi Lan in 1930, hails from Vân Du, now Xuân Trúc in Hưng Yên province, a region known for its patriotic traditions. She emerged as a shining example of love for her country, serving as a brave police officer who sacrificed her life to protect revolutionary bases, becoming a symbol of indomitable spirit and resilience.

After the August Revolution in 1945, Bui Thi Cuc became actively involved in local organizations, focusing on mass mobilization. In 1947, she joined the Communist Party and later worked as a leader in the Women's Union of Ân Thi district. During this time, the enemy intensified its terror against the revolutionary movement in the area. The military established bases in key villages, including Quang Trung, now Xuân Trúc, where they built a stronghold to control surrounding regions and monitor National Route 5.

Bui Thi Cuc was tasked with enemy mobilization and was sent for training by the police force. By December 1949, she became a police officer, engaged in counterintelligence and gathering information on enemy activities. Under the guise of a trusted ally, she skillfully infiltrated enemy ranks, leading to critical intelligence being relayed back to her comrades.

Following a plan to eliminate the enemy commander, Nguyen Doan Nhi, Bui Thi Cuc arranged a meeting with him in her village. Nhi fell into the trap, was captured, and subsequently killed. However, the enemy retaliated fiercely, surrounding Vân Mạc village and arresting over 40 individuals, including party members. Bui Thi Cuc was among those captured, enduring brutal torture but refusing to betray her comrades.

On May 15, 1950, the enemy executed her in a brutal manner. Her heroic spirit resonated throughout the nation, and on January 15, 1952, President Ho Chi Minh posthumously awarded her the Third Class Independence Medal and the honorific title "Live Bravely, Die with Glory." In 1995, she was posthumously recognized as a Hero of the People's Armed Forces.

To honor her legacy, the Bui Thi Cuc Memorial Site was established in Vân Mạc, covering over 13,000 square meters, featuring a statue, a shrine, and exhibition areas. This project, with an investment of approximately 68.6 billion VND, aims to educate future generations about her contributions and instill a sense of patriotism and responsibility.

As the memorial stands completed, it showcases valuable documents and artifacts related to Bui Thi Cuc's life and the history of the police force during the resistance against French colonialism. Local officials emphasize that this site serves as a vital place of remembrance and a source of inspiration for the youth, ensuring that the legacy of "Live Bravely, Die with Glory" continues to inspire future generations to build a prosperous and civilized homeland.
