Tornado Sighted in Hưng Yên Rice Field

A tornado was observed in a rice field in Bình Thanh commune, Hưng Yên, on the afternoon of July 8, lasting approximately two minutes before gradually dissipating amid heavy rainfall. Local resident Nguyễn Thị Lụa reported that around 1:30 PM, a small vortex appeared, initially lifting a few objects from the ground.

Shortly after, the vortex grew larger and extended upwards, forming a funnel shape that connected with the dark clouds above. As the tornado dissipated, heavy rain began to fall. The video recorded by Lụa shows a grayish-white column stretching from the ground to the base of the storm clouds, moving within a narrow area of the rice field before fading away.

Local authorities confirmed that the tornado did not cause any damage. Tornadoes are a powerful swirling wind phenomenon that forms within a limited area, creating a funnel-shaped column of air that connects from storm clouds to the ground. While the impact area is usually small, the wind speed within a tornado can tear off roofs, uproot trees, and toss objects along its path.

According to the Meteorological Department, the tornado occurred as Northern Vietnam was under the influence of a low-pressure trough. Specifically, Quảng Ninh, Hải Phòng, the coastal region of Hưng Yên, and Ninh Bình were affected by this low-pressure trough combined with a low vortex above Northern Vietnam, leading to the development of strong convective clouds. The tornado in Hưng Yên formed within this convective area.

The meteorological agency noted that this phenomenon was included in weather forecasts and warnings for thunderstorms in the coastal waters of the Gulf of Bắc Bộ, indicating a risk of tornadoes, strong winds, and large waves.
