New Overnight Stay Reporting Requirement in Vietnam

New Overnight Stay Reporting Requirement in Vietnam

Beginning on July 1, 2026, a new law in Vietnam will require individuals staying overnight at a residence to be reported to local authorities. This law, part of the amendments to the 2025 Security and Order Law, mandates that family members must inform the residence registration agency when someone stays overnight.

According to Article 30 of the amended Residence Law, if a household member is absent, the guest is responsible for notifying the authorities. The previous regulation did not specify the need for reporting overnight stays, only mentioning guests in general.

The notification must include the guest's full name, date of birth, personal identification number or passport number, reason for the stay, duration of the stay, and the address where they will be staying. Notifications must be made before 11 PM on the day the guest arrives; if they arrive after this time, the report must be submitted by 8 AM the following day.

This regulation also applies to owners or managers of overnight accommodation facilities, who must ensure that guests are reported. Notifications can be made either in person at the police station or online through the VNeID application.

The new law is set to take effect on July 1, 2026, and aims to improve security and order in residential areas across Vietnam.
