On July 2, 2023, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, officiated the beatification of Father Trương Bửu Diệp at the Tắc Sậy Pilgrimage Center in Cà Mau, Vietnam. This significant ceremony was attended by over 70,000 people, marking a historic moment as it was the first beatification ceremony to be held in Vietnam since the introduction of Catholicism nearly 500 years ago.

Cardinal Tagle arrived in Vietnam on June 30, representing Pope Leo XIV. He was welcomed at Nội Bài Airport by Archbishop Marek Zalewski, the Vatican representative in Vietnam, along with other bishops. Following his arrival, Cardinal Tagle attended a private Mass at the Archdiocese of Hanoi on July 1 before traveling to Cà Mau.

Father Trương Bửu Diệp, born on January 1, 1897, in An Giang, dedicated his life to serving the poor and the local community. After studying for 27 years, he was ordained a priest and began his ministry in Tắc Sậy in 1930. Tragically, he was murdered in March 1946 while defending his parishioners amidst a backdrop of conflict.

The beatification process is a significant recognition within the Catholic Church, acknowledging individuals who exemplify a life of faith and virtue. It is the third stage in the canonization process, which includes Servant of God, Venerable, Blessed, and Saint. According to the Archdiocese of Saigon, Vietnam has recognized 117 individuals as Blessed, many of whom were martyrs during the period of 1644-1883.

The ceremony for Father Trương Bửu Diệp is a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of faith in Vietnam, as his burial site has become a pilgrimage destination for hundreds of thousands each year.
