Central Buddhist Committees Conclude IX Term Activities

On June 30, 2026, the Central Committees for Monastic Affairs, Control, and Legislation held a conference at Quang Duc Monastery in Ho Chi Minh City to summarize their activities during the IX term (2022-2027). The meeting was led by Elder Thich Thien Nhon, Vice Chairman of the Council of Elders and Chairman of the Council of Monastic Affairs.

In his opening remarks, Elder Thich Thien Nhon emphasized the strong sense of responsibility and unity demonstrated by the committees throughout the term. He noted that they successfully implemented many key Buddhist affairs, fostering solidarity and harmony within the monastic community. This collective effort contributed significantly to the sustainable development of the Buddhist Church.

One of the central tasks highlighted was the digital transformation within the Church. The establishment of a database for monks and nuns, management of monasteries, and the digitization of administrative records were deemed essential for creating a modern, transparent, and efficient administrative framework. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of Buddhist services and improve communication between the central body and provincial committees.

The year 2026 is pivotal as it marks the end of the IX term, and the conference serves as a critical preparation for the upcoming 10th National Buddhist Congress. Elder Thich Nhon urged attendees to focus on reviewing the implementation of the IX Congress resolutions, assessing the current situation, and preparing for future leadership transitions to ensure a solid foundation for the Church's continued growth.

During the IX term, the Central Committee for Monastic Affairs reported significant achievements, including the issuance of new operational regulations comprising 15 chapters and 85 articles. The Church currently has 54,973 monks and nuns, with various sects represented, and approximately 60% of Vietnam's 99 million population identifies as Buddhist.

In total, the committee conferred 1,402 promotions to monks and nuns, organized 30 major ordination ceremonies, and issued nearly 4,000 certificates for first-time ordination. The annual retreat program for monks and nuns has seen about 36,000 participants each year.

The meeting concluded with Elder Thich Nhon presenting commendation certificates to distinguished members, recognizing their contributions to the Buddhist community.
