Hundreds of Gold Bars Worth Over 222 Billion VND Found in Mr Pips' Girlfriend's Home
Authorities have uncovered hundreds of gold bars valued at over 222 billion VND during a search of the home

A 66-year-old monk in Thailand, Phra Wachirayan Wi, has been arrested on charges of embezzling nearly 80 billion VND (around $3.5 million) from the Wat Phutthaisawan temple. The police reported that the former abbot misappropriated funds from donations and revenue generated from the sale of amulets and other sacred items over a period of at least two years.
Following an anonymous tip in July 2026, law enforcement officials conducted a search of the monk's residence, where they discovered a substantial amount of cash, gold bars, jewelry, and land documents, totaling an estimated value of $6.4 million. During the investigation, it was also revealed that Phra Wachirayan Wi had a romantic relationship with his 47-year-old assistant, Punyawi Rungruang, who has been implicated as an accomplice in the money laundering activities.
Both Phra Wachirayan Wi and Rungruang are currently awaiting trial, facing serious charges that could result in lengthy prison sentences, including life imprisonment, and the confiscation of their assets. The former abbot, who had a notable career within the Thai Buddhist community, held various significant positions at the royal temple before his arrest.
Phra Wachirayan Wi, also known as Atichoti Dhammavaro, was ordained in 1997 and served in multiple prestigious roles, including temporary abbot and deputy abbot. His involvement in the temple's operations and the subsequent scandal has raised questions about the integrity of religious institutions in the region.
The case continues to unfold as authorities investigate potential connections to additional individuals involved in these criminal activities.
