Tributes Paid to Nguyễn Đình Hối, Founder of University Medical Center

Nguyễn Đình Hối, a prominent figure in Vietnam's medical community and the founder of the University Medical Center in Ho Chi Minh City, has passed away at the age of 92. He died early on June 29, 2023, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in medical education and healthcare.

Born in 1934 in Thanh Hóa, Nguyễn Đình Hối graduated from Hanoi Medical University in 1960. He served as the rector of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City from 1993 to 2007. Throughout his tenure, he was known for his dedication to both teaching and practicing medicine, guiding numerous students and professionals in the field.

During his career, he chaired the university's admissions council and supervised 23 doctoral theses, 9 master's theses, and numerous other academic works. He authored 10 textbooks and contributed to over 70 scientific reports, showcasing his commitment to advancing medical knowledge.

Nguyễn Đình Hối was also the head of the Hepatobiliary Surgery Center and played a significant role in organizing various national and international medical conferences. His contributions were recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Second-Class Resistance Medal and the Second-Class Labor Medal.

In 2004, he received the Tôn Thất Tùng Award for his significant contributions to the field of surgery in Vietnam. Just months before his passing, he was honored with the “Lifetime Contribution Award” from the Ministry of Health and the Asian Hospital Management Association for his impactful work in the healthcare sector.

The news of his passing has deeply saddened his family, colleagues, patients, and many generations of doctors he trained. His son, Nguyễn Hoàng Bắc, the current director of the University Medical Center, expressed his heartfelt emotions, stating, “Father, you have left us, your family, colleagues, and beloved students.”

Nguyễn Đình Hối's funeral will be held at the National Funeral Home in Ho Chi Minh City from June 29 to July 1, 2023, before his final resting place at Bình Dương Cemetery.
