Hanoi Launches Construction of Five Metro Lines Worth Over $55 Billion

On June 22, 2023, Hanoi kicked off the construction of five metro lines, a monumental investment exceeding 1.3 million billion VND (approximately $55 billion). This project aims to enhance the urban transportation network and reduce traffic congestion in the capital.

The five metro lines include Line 1, which will connect Thường Tín through Ngọc Hồi, Hanoi Station, Yên Viên, and Nội Bài Airport; Line 2, linking Nội Bài with Trần Hưng Đạo, Thượng Đình, and the southern areas of the city; and Line 8, which will run from Hòa Lạc through Mai Dịch, Vành Đai 3 to Dương Xá. The remaining two lines are Line 10, connecting Đông Anh, Võ Chí Công, Vành Đai 3, Vành Đai 2.5, and Times City; and Line 14, which will stretch from Thăng Long Bridge through Hồng Hà to Gia Lâm.

Once completed, these metro lines will connect key locations such as Nội Bài Airport, Hanoi Station, and various new development areas in the capital. The network will also link with existing Lines 3 and 5, creating a comprehensive public transportation system.

Vu Dai Thang, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee, emphasized that this is the largest urban railway investment program in the city's history, transitioning from constructing individual lines to forming a cohesive urban network. He stated that the metro system is a crucial infrastructure component in Hanoi's multi-polar, multi-center development model.

The consortium of Vinhomes and VinSpeed has been appointed as the general contractor for the design, equipment supply, and construction of these five projects. The city aims to complete the majority of the metro lines by 2030.

According to the 100-year vision for the capital, Hanoi's urban railway network is projected to span approximately 979 kilometers. Including national and inter-regional railways, the entire system will reach nearly 1,200 kilometers. Currently, Hanoi operates the Cát Linh - Hà Đông line and the elevated section of the Nhổn - Hanoi Station line.

The city plans to invest in about 500 kilometers of urban rail by 2035, with the remaining 479 kilometers to be completed between 2036 and 2045.
