U.S. aircraft carrier arrives in Danang for six-day Vietnam visit

HCMC – America’s aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan arrived at Tien Sa port in the central beach city of Danang today, June 25, for a six-day friendship visit to Vietnam.

This is the third Vietnam visit by a U.S. aircraft carrier since 2018.

Pham Thu Hang, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told a regular news conference of the ministry on June 22 that the Vietnam visit by the , the ninth Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, lasts from June 25 to 30.

The visit coincides with the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the comprehensive partnership between the two nations.

The USS Ronald Reagan comes with two escort ships, the guided-missile cruisers USS Antietam CG54 and USS Robert Smalls CG62.

During the visit, the U.S. Navy Convoy Command Group will be visiting leaders of the Danang City People’s Committee and the Third Naval Region Command, reported the Vietnam News Agency. The officers and crew members on the U.S. ships will be joining cultural and professional exchanges, community service projects, goodwill sports games, and humanitarian activities.

The USS Carl Vinson visited Danang City in March 2018, becoming the first U.S. aircraft carrier to visit Vietnam in more than 40 years. It is America’s third Nimitz-class aircraft carrier with a crew of 5,000 sailors.

When Vietnam and the U.S. marked the 25th anniversary of the normalization of bilateral ties, the USS Theodore Roosevelt visited Vietnam in March 2020, becoming the second aircraft carrier to come to the country. It is the fourth Nimitz-class, nuclear-powered, aircraft carrier in the United States Navy.
