COVID-19: 18 out of 28 fresh infections linked to Hai Duong hotspot

One of the new cases is a 28-year-old returnee to Ho Chi Minh City from the northern province of Hai Duong, Vietnam's current biggest coronavirus hotspot.

Two other cases are a couple in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai, related to the outbreak in Chi Linh in Hai Duong.

A 40-year-old man in Hanoi's Nam Tu Liem District and a 34-year-old man in Dong Anh District were diagnosed with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Both are linked to the cluster in Hai Duong province.

Quang Ninh province also detected four COVID-19 patients, all connected to Chi Linh hotspot. The 18 remaining cases are also linked to the Hai Duong epicenter.

On the night of January 29, the health ministry also recorded an imported Covid-19 patient who is a 47-year-old American expert. He touched down at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat Airport on January 28 and was under quarantine upon entry.

The same day, 8 more coronavirus patients were declared free from the virus, bringing the total number of fully-recovered cases to 1,456.

Elsewhere, approximately 5,000 samples were taken as part of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) testing on January 30 in the northern province of Hai Duong, the country’s latest COVID-19 hotspot.

Since the initial detection of the latest outbreak, contact tracing and testing have been given the top priority in order to promptly quarantine individuals who came into close contact with confirmed cases.

Health workers from major hospitals nationwide, including Bach Mai Hospital, the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases, and the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, have travelled to the province in order to step up efforts.

In line with this policy, Hai Duong’s testing capacity and speed of processing tests has been improved in order to conduct up to 5,000 samples per day.

The Hai Duong Medical Technical University has therefore sent 600 volunteers to support localities and the health sector in survey and testing methods.

Roughly 3,000 residents are now under quarantine, including more than 1,240 people who came into direct contact with COVID-19 patients.

The new COVID-19 wave recurred on January 28 and has spread to at least seven localities across the nation so far.
