However, current strategies emphasize protecting vital organs like the heart, kidneys, and eyes, placing the patient at the center of care. Early detection of complications and interdisciplinary collaboration are crucial for long-term treatment success.

Dr. Bay noted that approximately 40% of individuals with type 2 diabetes develop chronic kidney disease. Diabetes and hypertension remain the top global causes of end-stage kidney failure. Prolonged high blood sugar can lead to retinal damage, causing macular edema and potential vision loss if not addressed promptly.

Effective diabetes management should involve a multidisciplinary approach, integrating expertise from endocrinology, nephrology, cardiology, ophthalmology, and clinical pharmacy.
