Hanoi to pilot public bike rental service next week

HCMC – The capital city of Hanoi will trial public bike rental service in six inner-city districts starting January 20, just in time for locals to use the service during the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday.

Tri Nam Group JSC, the investor of the public bike rental service project, planned to set up the first public bike station in Cong Vi Ward, Ba Dinh District, on January 9, said Do Ba Quan, a representative of the firm.

He added that two districts, Ba Dinh and Hoan Kiem, had handed over land for setting up 34 stations. On January 12, bikes equipped with smart keys will be transported to these stations. The investor will arrange some 10 bikes at every station by January 20 to serve the two-week trial.

The Hanoi Department of Transport in mid-November last year proposed the city’s government allow Tri Nam Group to trial the public bike rental service in some districts.

According to the investor’s plan, Tri Nam would provide 1,000 bikes, half of them e-bikes, at 94 stations, with a total investment of over VND30 billion. These bikes would be available along sidewalks in Ba Dinh, Tay Ho, Dong Da, Hoan Kiem, Thanh Xuan and Hai Ba Trung districts.

Users will be charged VND5,000 for each 30-minute ride using bicycles and VND10,000 for e-bikes. The all-day rental service will cost VND60,000 for bicycles and VND120,000 for e-bikes per user. Payments can be made via banking apps and e-wallets.
