HCMC begins work on Highway 50 expansion today

HCMC – The HCMC Management Board of Investment and Construction of Traffic Projects today, December 27, broke ground on the National Highway 50 expansion project, with a total cost of VND1.5 trillion.

A section of the highway spanning seven kilometers in the city’s outlying district of Binh Chanh from Nguyen Van Linh Avenue to the border with Long An Province will be widened to 34 meters from eight meters for six lanes, the local media reported.

Some 4.4 kilometers of the road will be constructed parallel to the current National Highway 50, while the remaining 2.5 kilometers will be upgraded and widened.

The project, which will be completed in 2024, will help ease traffic congestion and boost connectivity between HCMC and Mekong Delta provinces.

The project is expected to affect 729 households and organizations. Until now, 85% of the land handover is complete.

Once in place, the expanded highway will become one of the city’s main routes, said HCMC Vice Chairman Bui Xuan Cuong.

National Highway 50, some 88 kilometers long, starts at Nhi Thien Duong Bridge in District 8, runs across Can Giuoc District in Long An Province and ends in Tien Giang Province in the Mekong Delta region.
